How a Home Battery Actually Works
A home battery sits between your solar panels, your switchboard, and the grid, and does one job: store electricity when it’s cheap or free, and release it when it would otherwise cost you money. The three components that matter:
The inverter

During the day, solar panels generate more power than most homes use. Without a battery, that excess gets exported to the grid for a small feed-in credit. With a battery, the excess charges the battery first — and only spills over to export once the battery is full. In the evening, instead of buying grid power at the full import rate, the home draws down the stored solar until the battery empties, at which point it falls back to the grid automatically.
Do You Need Solar Panels First?
Technically, no
A battery can be installed and charged directly from the grid, using cheaper off-peak electricity to fill it and discharging during expensive periods. This is sometimes called “grid arbitrage.”
Financially, almost always yes
Without solar, you’re paying for every kWh that goes into the battery — just at a cheaper time of day. With solar, a large share of what fills the battery is electricity you generated for free and would otherwise have sold back to the grid for very little. That’s the difference between a battery that pays for itself in a reasonable timeframe and one that barely breaks even.

Why a Battery Actually Saves You Money
The mechanism is the same for every Synergy customer on a standard plan, and it comes down to the gap between two numbers:

Without a battery, spare solar generated during the day gets sold back to the grid at that low feed-in rate. Then, once the sun goes down, the same household buys electricity back from the grid at the much higher import rate — effectively selling cheap and buying back expensive, on the exact same electricity, most days of the year.
Under WA’s DEBS (Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme), export rates vary by time of day — currently around 10c/kWh during the 3–9pm peak window and roughly 2c/kWh off-peak. The number that actually matters is evening and overnight usage — what you draw from the grid after the sun stops generating, since that’s the only window a battery can realistically cover.

A battery is only as useful as the solar generation available to fill it. In Perth, a well-oriented, unshaded system generates roughly 5.3kWh per kW of installed panels per day on average across the year — less in winter, more in summer.

Placement & Dimensions
Most residential batteries are IP65-rated for outdoor use, which opens up more placement options than people expect — but “rated for outdoor” doesn’t mean “suited to any outdoor spot.”

The WA Residential Battery Scheme
WA’s state battery rebate is administered per usable kWh, with a different rate and cap depending on which network you’re on.

The Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Unlike the state rebate, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies right across Australia, and its structure changed on 1 May 2026 to a tiered rate rather than a single flat percentage.

This is exactly why battery size sits so close to those tier boundaries in our size-specific guides — a system sized just under or over 14kWh, or scaled up toward 28kWh, sees a materially different blended rebate rate. The federal rebate is applied as an upfront discount by your installer, the same way it works in every other state.
Stacking Both Rebates: A Worked Example
Both rebates apply to the same system and are calculated independently, then combined into a single upfront reduction before finance is considered.
State rebate: $130 × 10kWh (capped) = $1,300
Federal rebate: applied at 100% up to 14kWh usable capacity — the full 13kWh qualifies at the standard rate
Both are deducted from the system price before any interest-free finance covers the remainder.
The exact federal dollar figure depends on the standard rate published for the relevant period, which your installer applies at quote stage — but the order is always the same: state rebate and federal rebate both reduce the price first, and finance covers whatever’s left.
Interest-Free Finance: The Plenti Loan
Once both rebates have reduced the price, Plenti — the WA Government’s appointed finance provider for the Residential Battery Scheme — can finance the remaining balance at 0% interest.
